The Prophecy

« Have you ever heard of the Dragonet Prophecy? »

Lost in my reading that day, I was pulled out by the little shaman from Uchronia's Haven. Carrying a book, she had come to meet me in the great library where I loved to let myself be drawn in by the precious manuscripts lining the walls, relics of ancient times and vanished civilizations. Looking malicious, she seemed to be waiting for my answer. Unaware of this omen, I replied, a little puzzled, that I was not familiar with this story. She pulled up a chair and sat down, ready to tell me more. Curious, I sat down too, grabbing my notebook and a few notes to scribble in.

After telling me about the prophecy we were talking about, the little shaman explained that it foretold the advent of five dragons who would put an end to the long war opposing several factions of these winged creatures. She went on to tell me more about these species, their specific characteristics, their respective habitats, their characters and, more generally, their history.

When the discussion was over, I quickly reread the prophecy, and set about finding other traces of it in the books in the room. By searching carefully and observing more closely the undertones of certain tales, I slowly managed to find tangible traces of the draconic confrontation that was supposed to have ended following the oracle, and to find further information to complement that provided by my little host.

That night, I kept combining various ingredients, observing their reactions, plunging them into the fire, then into other utensils, sometimes rereading my notes before proceeding with new transmutations. Absorbed in my work, I didn't see the time fly...

Finally, darkness rose to bring the light, and as I was giving a last breath of life to the eggs emerging from the smoky hearth where multiple transformations had taken place during the night, I heard a little voice: « The dragonets are coming... » The little shaman stood in the doorway, smiling. She entered the room to discover the fruit of my hard labor, which she examined meticulously.

« In fact, I said, they are not coming yet, but their time is approaching. If you don't mind, I'll leave you to finish my task. When I create dragon eggs, I have to find trustworthy people to become their guardians, and if I can't, I return the egg to nature to protect it. It's now up to you to do the same with these... »

The little shaman turned to them once more, a smile on her face.
